Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a scientifically proven method promoting a positive effect on your emotional and physical well-being by teaching you to alter your brain activity, blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate and other critical bodily functions. Biofeedback techniques use monitoring devices to furnish information regarding an autonomic bodily function, such as heart rate or blood pressure, in an attempt to gain some voluntary control over that function. It may be used clinically to treat certain conditions, such as hypertension and migraine headache. SCI provides biofeedback through innovative biofeedback hardware platform which measures heart rate variability (HRV) skin conductance level (SCL) through a computer game and finger sensors worn by the recipient. The computer game biofeedback method teaches a person to learn control of bodily reactions and improve HRV through various levels of breathing, relaxation, and meditation techniques. These activities are quickly mastered and the techniques can be incorporated into everyday life to manage stress and improve your total physical and mental health. Results are obtained through regular and consistent training.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is biofeedback? A: Biofeedback is a scientifically proven method promoting a positive effect on your emotional and physical well-being by teaching you to alter your brain activity, blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate and other critical bodily functions. Biofeedback techniques use monitoring devices to furnish information regarding an autonomic bodily function, such as heart rate or blood pressure, in an attempt to gain some voluntary control over that function. It may be used clinically to treat certain conditions, such as hypertension and migraine headache.
Q: How does it work? A: When you get scared or tense your heart-rate increases and your fingers become sweaty. When you relax your heart-rate decreases and your fingers become dry. Biofeedback uses electronic equipment to monitor people's internal physiological states and gives feedback that helps the recipient learn how to control these states, to activate, balance, release or to recover from them. Usually this also involves a coach, who guides the process, interprets the results, and makes suggestions. SCI uses computer gaming technology to provide entertaining training and visual feedback to the participant. Biofeedback gaming technology used by SCI measures the participant’s Skin Conductance Level (SCL) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). SCL measures sweat gland activity. Increased perspiration indicates increased autonomic nervous system activation, which is associated with increased energy-both positive, like excitement, and negative, like nervousness. HRV is calculated from the differences in heart rate from one heartbeat to another. No two intervals are exactly the same, and you need a device more sophisticated than just taking your pulse to determine it. Greater HRV is a healthy goal. In fact, people who exhibit this tend to live longer and enjoy life more. The game gives players more awareness of the emotional, mental-and potentially spiritual-correlation of physical states. When players acquire enough awareness of how to make the shift from one state to another, they can begin to do this voluntarily. They can have integrated what body, emotions, spirit and thought.
Q: What about medication? A: Medication can be taken while participating in biofeedback.
Q: What is the cost? A: Biofeedback is inexpensive and can be conducted in office with a therapist and/or the software is available for purchase for home training through SCI. Clients often opt for a combination where they participate in biofeedback in the office with a therapist and purchase the software for home training. A package option may be of interest based on individual needs.
Q: Does insurance pay? A: SCI does not accept assignment from insurance companies as we choose to work directly with and for our clients. Since we understand the importance of insurance filing to our clients, we will provide you with an insurance-ready receipt after receiving your payment so that you can use it to submit a claim to your insurance company. Any reimbursement would be paid directly to you by the insurance company. Please be advised that biofeedback may not be covered by some insurances.
Q: Why use biofeedback? A: Biofeedback is a safe, effective and non-invasive procedure used to treat a variety of physiological problems. Biofeedback is widely used as a powerful treatment for stress reduction. Psychologists and medical doctors currently use and are continuing to research the use of biofeedback in treating ADHD, performance anxiety, depression, migraines, and a number of other conditions.
Q: How many sessions are required? A: SCI recommends participating in 2-5 sessions in the office prior to purchasing software for use in the home. However, software can be purchased from SCI without participation in sessions in the office. Biofeedback is a training and therefore takes practice and dedication to master. Biofeedback can take months to learn and becomes a lifelong practice integrated into one’s daily life. With practice biofeedback becomes an involuntary response to life’s triggers.
